Clinical Study Shows Gains in Arm Movement Years after a Stroke

A major clinical study has found that stroke survivors can show modest yet meaningful gains in limb movement and an improved outlook on life years after suffering a stroke. The paper, published online in the New England Journal of Medicine, provides the best evidence yet that stroke sufferers in a controlled study can regain limb movement long after an injury, through intensive therapy.

“There are about 6.4 million stroke patients in the U.S. with chronic deficits. We’ve shown that with the right therapy, they can see improvements in movement, everyday function, and quality of life,” said Albert Lo, assistant professor of neurology at Brown University and the study’s lead author. “This is giving stroke survivors new hope.”

The three-year randomized control trial by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs enrolled 127 veterans at four VA sites. All had suffered a stroke at least six months earlier and had moderate to severe impairment of an arm. On average, the strokes had occurred nearly five years before; one-third of the victims had suffered multiple strokes. Patients typically get rehabilitation therapy only during the first six months or so after a stroke. Conventional thinking has been that long-term stroke survivors cannot accrue additional meaningful benefits after that time. Recent studies, though, have begun to suggest otherwise.

How Important is Exercise Following Stroke

The leading causes of mortality in stroke survivors are cardiovascular disease and recurrent stroke.  However, physical activity decreases the risk factors associated with those two outcomes. This is another reason why exercise with devices such as Tailwind can be so important.

Psychosocial factors also affect stroke survivors depending on the subsequent degree of disability. These and other factors can lead to post-stroke depression, the incidence of which ranges from 18 to 68 percent.

New Product Allows Stroke Survivors to Recover Arm Movement - Even Years After a Stroke

Anatomical Concepts are about to launch a new exercise product to assist persons recovering from a stroke to recover arm movement.  In research studies its been shown to help individuals even many years after a stroke. And we know that 44 percent of people who've had a stroke will normally have to tolerate arm weakness.

Stroke is actually common you know.  It’s like this.  Every five minutes someone in the UK has one.   That’s an estimated 150,000 people per year.  If you’re a male the bad news is that almost one in four men aged 45 can expect to have a stroke if they live to 85.  Women are slightly better off with odds of one in five. Of course, when we really think about it, governments and health services are concerned that in the future they can’t possibly cope with providing quality care for all that might need it.  You may well feel that’s the case right now.  Look around and you see that more and more individuals are searching for practical ways they can get back on track with their lives after stroke.
