Klaveness Shoe PosterWe have worked with Heel and Forefoot relief shoes for over ten years in diabetic foot management. So often,  patients who initially have used a PRAFO to heal an ulcer have used these shoes to continue their progress into community ambulation.

We are pleased to have assisted Klaveness Skofabrikk of Norway in the development of three shoes that we feel are an advance on the state of the art. The range features a trauma shoe too.

It is estimated that around fifteen percent of all people that develop diabetes will require treatment for diabetic foot problems. One of those problems is the heel ulcer, the leading cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputations.

Health Economics and Diabetic Foot Lesions

For many years clinicians have recognised that prevention of diabetic foot lesions is vital - simply because at the individual and societal level, these complications are extremely costly.  It is surprising therefore that there are relatively few reports however on the health-economic consequences of diabetic foot complications. It is one thing for clinicians who use the PRAFO for example, to believe that this device can prevent heel ulcers, but it is important to have evidence of such efficacy and that such action is cost-effective.

Orthotic Prescription Process for the Diabetic Foot

Introduction

To be effective, orthoses intended for the prevention and treatment of diabetic foot lesions require multi-disciplinary considerations of the prescription process.  It is no longer acceptable to use generic prescription approaches when presented with a complex spectrum of management issues.

This article will set out a rational approach to the use of orthoses in prophylaxis, treatment and the maintenance of at risk neuropathic and neuro ischaemic lesions. It will outline footwear options and the use of forefoot and hind foot orthoses in the treatment plan.
