Experience with the V-VAS Knee Orthosis
At the recent ISPO World Congress held in Leipzig, Germany, AC(UK) Directors Derek Jones and William Munro, along with consultant orthopaedic surgeon Martin Buchan, revealed preliminary data from a five year follow-up of over a 100 severe OA knee cases managed with the V-VAS Knee orthosis.
This study reports the results of using a custom-made knee orthosis, the V-VAS as an alternative to surgical intervention. You can read more here and download a copy of our poster about the study. The V-VAS was found to be an ethical and effective device with 90% demonstrating significantly improved pain and mobility. UK manufacture and distribution is planned for the near future.
How Important is Exercise Following Stroke
The leading causes of mortality in stroke survivors are
cardiovascular disease and recurrent stroke. However, physical
activity decreases the risk factors associated with those
two outcomes. This is another reason why exercise with devices such as Tailwind can be so important.
Psychosocial factors also affect stroke survivors depending on the subsequent degree of disability. These and other factors can lead to post-stroke depression, the incidence of which ranges from 18 to 68 percent.
New Medical Shoes for Diabetes & Trauma Applications
We have worked with Heel and Forefoot relief shoes for over ten years in diabetic foot management. So often, patients who initially have used a PRAFO to heal an ulcer have used these shoes to continue their progress into community ambulation.
We are pleased to have assisted Klaveness Skofabrikk of Norway in the development of three shoes that we feel are an advance on the state of the art. The range features a trauma shoe too.

V-VAS Knee Orthosis Ready for the Next Level
Munro and Jones of Anatomical Concepts along with orthopaedic surgeon Martin Buchan of Inverclyde Hospital, won a "Best Paper" prize at the BAPO Congress in 2008 for their paper on "Management of Severe OA Knee Problems - A customised knee orthosis" Since then developments have progressed and a significant advance will take place shortly with the arrival of local manufacture of the V-VAS.
Stroke Survivors Given Boost by Tailwind
Revolutionary Arm Exerciser Launched in the UK!
Dr Derek Jones, Director of Anatomical Concepts said: “This is the first time that such an effective arm exerciser has been available for stroke survivors to use at home. It marks an important step forward in the UK’s ability to offer stroke patients with arm movement difficulties, the chance to take stroke rehabilitation into their own hands.”
Cognitive Rehab Gets Support
Cognitive rehabilitation after a serious brain injury or stroke can help the mind in much the same way that physical therapy helps the body, according to a new meta-analysis. Because the data suggest that treatment may work best when tailored to age, injury, symptoms, and time since injury, the findings may help establish evidence-based treatment guidelines.
FES Cycling Aids Individuals following a Stroke
A new study published in the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine focused
on whether FES Cycling could be beneficial in the rehabilitation of
post-acute stroke patients. Seventy percent of the FES Cycling
patients learned how to perform the sit to stand movement with three
different rising speeds whilst no patients in the control group could
achieve this.
